Show History

Nash Holos Ukrainian Roots Radio first went to air on June 4, 1990, as a community‑driven program highlighting Ukrainian culture, history, and contemporary life. The original run, co‑hosted by Paulette MacQuarrie with Eugene Lupynis and Bohdan Zajcew, continued until 1996.

In 2000 the program returned to the airwaves on AM1320 CHMB in Vancouver, this time with Paulette (Pawlina) Demchuk MacQuarrie as the sole host. The early 2000s relaunch focused primarily on “great Ukrainian music.”

Spoken‑word features were added gradually in the years that followed, and the presentation shifted from a strictly bilingual format to one delivered primarily in English, with Ukrainian elements retained in the show’s signature features.

In 2001 the program began offering its content online, years before “podcasting” became a recognized term, making Nash Holos one of the earliest Ukrainian‑Canadian broadcasts available on the internet.

From 2010 to 2020 the program was internationally syndicated by Taiwan‑based PCJ Media International, reaching listeners on shortwave, AM, FM, and satellite in more than 20 countries.

In 2011 a live edition was introduced in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, expanding the show’s reach and strengthening its connection to listeners across British Columbia.

Over time, new contributors joined the program, bringing book reviews, culinary features, and cultural commentary. Interviews brought listeners into conversations with authors, musicians, filmmakers, diplomats, academics, war correspondents, dignitaries, and other figures shaping Ukrainian and Ukrainian‑diaspora life.

Today Nash Holos remains an independent, long‑running Ukrainian‑Canadian radio program with a global audience, reflecting the evolving story of Ukraine and its diaspora through music, conversation, and cultural insight. Nash Holos has also begun branching into publishing, building on decades of broadcast work.
