The Role of Music in the Show

Music has always been a defining element of Nash Holos Ukrainian Roots Radio. Each full broadcast features Ukrainian music that reflects the culture, history, and lived experience of Ukrainians in Ukraine and around the world.

The program includes traditional folk music, lively zabava (Ukrainian‑Canadian party) music, contemporary Ukrainian pop and rock, choral and liturgical selections, and recordings by artists in the global Ukrainian diaspora.

Performers range from well‑known Ukrainian musicians to emerging and independent artists whose work contributes to the preservation and evolution of Ukrainian musical heritage.

How the music has evolved

The music has stayed true to its roots, even as newer influences have worked their way into the mix over time.

Ukrainian‑Canadian performers have been a major part of the repertoire since the show began in 1990, and a new generation of artists in Canada is now adding fresh energy and perspectives.

At the same time, the rapidly expanding music scene in Ukraine has brought a wider range of voices into the mix, creating a gentle tsunami of musical collaborations that reflect the shared cultural roots of musicians on both sides of the ocean.

How the music is chosen

Music is a universal language, and it transcends mere words. The selections are chosen to fit the tone of each episode, showcase the depth and variety of Ukrainian musical expression, and introduce listeners to artists across generations and borders.

The foundation is traditional, but there’s room for contemporary and unconventional choices when they bring something fresh to the musical mix.
